How to Specify an Aluminum Honeycomb Ceiling Before Requesting a Quote

A request that says only “aluminum honeycomb ceiling, 2,000 square meters” leaves most of the important work unresolved. The supplier still needs to understand the panel layout, support method, perimeter, openings, finish, access strategy, documentation, and delivery conditions. Without that information, quotations may describe different systems even when the product names look similar.
An aluminum honeycomb panel is a sandwich construction with aluminum face sheets and a honeycomb core. That description identifies the product family, not the finished ceiling assembly. The project specification must define how the panels are sized, edged, supported, coordinated, approved, and maintained.
Start with a reflected ceiling plan
The first useful document is not a product photograph. It is a reflected ceiling plan showing room dimensions, panel joints, finished ceiling levels, major architectural lines, lights, air terminals, sprinklers, detectors, speakers, access points, and perimeter conditions.
Set the panel grid from the parts of the room that people will notice: entrances, long circulation routes, glazing lines, reception counters, columns, and transitions to other materials. Check the remaining border dimensions on every side. A narrow cut panel may be manufacturable, but it can still make the ceiling look poorly set out.
Choose panel dimensions with joints and handling in mind
Large-format panels can reduce the number of visible joints, but panel size cannot be selected from appearance alone. Lift routes, packing, transport, site storage, installer access, suspension points, allowable tolerances, and replacement all affect a practical module.

Treat these as published examples rather than automatic choices for a new project. Define the complete panel build-up
A usable specification identifies more than the overall panel thickness. Ask for the face-sheet material and thickness, back sheet, honeycomb core, adhesive or bonding process, formed edge, corner treatment, stiffeners where required, suspension hardware, and the proposed fixing sequence. If the supplier uses different constructions for different panel sizes or finishes, those differences should appear in the submittal.
The supporting structure also needs clear responsibility. Show where panel loads are transferred and how the ceiling connects to the building. Lights, ducts, cable trays, speakers, access equipment, and other services should not be assumed to hang from a decorative ceiling panel unless the project design specifically provides for it.
Detail the perimeter and every interruption
Straight field joints are usually the easy part. Problems appear at walls, columns, curved boundaries, level changes, bulkheads, movement joints, doors, signs, and service penetrations. Draw these conditions at a useful scale. State the intended joint width, trim profile, reveal, shadow gap, or closure instead of relying on a note that says “finish to architect’s approval.”
Openings for luminaires, diffusers, detectors, sprinklers, cameras, and access points should be coordinated before fabrication. Confirm which openings are factory prepared, which can be formed on site, and what reinforcement or edge treatment is required. Unreviewed field cuts can create visible misalignment and may affect the integrity of the panel assembly.
Approve the finish as a system, not as a color chip
The referenced product pages show PVDF-coated, powder-coated, pre-painted, transfer-printed, white, RAL-color, and wood-grain examples. The selected coating should match the project environment and required appearance. Confirm color, gloss, texture, grain direction where relevant, allowable variation, protective film, and the method for repairing or replacing damaged panels.
For a large or highly visible ceiling, review an assembled mock-up under lighting similar to the finished space. Include at least one joint, one perimeter, one light or diffuser, and one removable condition. A loose sample can confirm color and surface, but it cannot show joint rhythm, flatness across several panels, or the appearance of service interfaces.
Ask for evidence tied to the proposed configuration
If the project requires fire, acoustic, structural, coating, environmental, or other performance documentation, state the applicable standard and acceptance criteria. Ask whether the submitted report covers the same materials, thicknesses, core, bonding, finish, panel size, and installation method being offered. A generic certificate or a claim copied from a product page may not represent the final assembly.

· Project location, building type, ceiling area, finished height, and installation programme.
· Reflected ceiling plan, panel grid, dimensions, joint width, and preferred maximum module.
· Panel build-up, edge detail, suspension concept, substrate, and load-responsibility notes.
· Perimeters, transitions, level changes, movement joints, openings, and removable zones.
· Finish system, color reference, gloss, grain direction, sample, and mock-up requirements.
· Required drawings, calculations, certificates, test reports, warranties, and approval sequence.
· Packing limits, site access, replacement quantity, delivery destination, and required dates.
